Assumption

August 18, 2009

The service on Sunday, 16 August 2009 included two very special additions. First, we had a small Choir to sing that masterpiece of 16th century English Church Music – William Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices. They were fabulous. This is what Fr. Ken wrote in the Liturgy Booklet:

The Mass for Four Voices
Considered as one of the great masters of English Church music, William Byrd began his professional career as organist and choirmaster of Lincoln Cathedral, a post he held from 1563 until 1572 when he was appointed to the prestigious position of Gentleman of the Chapel Royal . His musical output was prodigious; it includes three Masses, the one we use this morning being written in1592. From that Mass, we have the Gloria, the Sanctus, the Benedictus and the Agnus Dei – being sung in their proper setting, which is not a concert hall, but the assembly of the Faithful around the altar of God. Our grateful thanks to Christopher Monckton and his Schola Cantorum Variensis for allowing us to share in this music.

And then, there was the blessing of a new, very lovely, chasuble:

The Festival Chasuble
Given in loving memory of Vincent Boening whose ashes are buried in our graveyard, this garment reminds us that the hallmarks of Christian worship are celebration and joy. Originally a festal garment worn by everyone, the chasuble is now worn only by the Celebrant of the Eucharist as he leads his people in thanksgiving for the great things God has done for us. The grace of its line recalls the beauty of holiness that is proper to our worship of God and its various colours lead us through the rhythm of the Liturgical Year.

A blessed day.
