About St. Hugh’s Church in Vence
Rector of St. Hugh’s and Holy Trinity Anglican Churches is Father Kenneth Letts. The Sunday Eucharist at St. Hugh’s is at 9 a.m.
The church is located on Avenue de la Résistance between the Place du Grand Jardin and Avenue Emile Hugues, 06140 Vence.
The Anglican church in Vence dates from the beginning of the 20th century, and celebrated the 75th anniversary of its consecration in 2005. Although it is a separate community, there is a close link with Holy Trinity, Nice, which is, in a sense, the mother church of the area.
Saint Hugh, who was the son of the Lord of Avalon in the Grenoble area, was a Carthusan monk of the Grande Chartreuse before becoming Prior of Witham in the West of England. From there, he was appointed Bishop of Lincoln in 1186. He was famous for his holiness and his courage. It is his statue that stands at the entrance to the church.
As in Nice, the oecumenical links are very strong. In Saint Hugh’s case, we are happy to allow the Eglise Réformée community to use our church on a regular basis – usually it is the Anglicans who profit from the hospitality of the French-speaking Churches.
A word of thanks to Roger (?) for the very warm welcome these past two Sunday mornings.
The Archdeacon says he could send me his notes for John Priestman’s memorial service in Strasbourg, if I give Roger my e-mail address.
